What are the functions of electrical porcelain?

Electrical porcelain is primarily used in power transmission lines, substations, and electrical equipment across various voltage levels, as well as in specialized sectors such as the power systems of rail transit, where it serves to connect conductors or components at different potentials while providing insulation and mechanical support.

What is “dirty flash”? How can it be prevented?

“Pollution flashover” refers to the deposition of pollutants—such as industrial dust and salt spray—on the surface of porcelain insulators. When exposed to moisture, including fog and dew, the conductivity of the contaminant layer increases, leading to surface discharge on the insulator. In severe cases, this can result in a short-circuit fault.

What is “S-shaped cracking”? How can it be prevented?

“S‑shaped cracks” are a common defect in the production of electrical porcelain, primarily occurring during the forming stage. Their causes are typically linked to suboptimal slurry material properties and improper selection of forming process parameters—such as wear on the slurry mill’s screw blades and an inadequately designed die outlet—and, in severe cases, can result in scrap rates as high as 20%–40%. Mitigation measures involve optimizing the raw‑material formulation and conducting regular inspections and maintenance of the forming equipment.

What are the main categories of electrical porcelain?

Based on voltage levels, they are primarily classified into three categories: Low-voltage porcelain: Suitable for systems below 1,000 volts. High-voltage porcelain: Suitable for systems ranging from 1 kV to 110 kV. Extra-high-voltage porcelain: Suitable for systems above 110 kV. According to material and application, they can be further categorized into feldspar ceramics (the most commonly used), high-alumina ceramics (with high mechanical strength), talc ceramics (characterized by low dielectric loss at high frequencies), and others. High-alumina ceramics, owing to their superior mechanical strength, are frequently employed in extra-high-voltage applications and in areas with severe environmental pollution.

What is electrical porcelain? Where is it primarily used?

Electrical porcelain, also known as electric porcelain, is an inorganic insulating material primarily manufactured by high‑temperature sintering of quartz, feldspar, and clay. It leverages its excellent electrical insulation properties and mechanical strength to serve a dual function: providing electrical insulation and mechanical support in power lines and equipment.
